Source of Loud Noise, Shaking in Central Illinois Identified

SPRINGFIELD — At approximately 11:20am, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency was made aware of a large noise and shaking felt by many residents throughout central Illinois.   This kicked off an immediate collaboration between federal, state and local officials to identify the impact and source of the incident.

Upon further review, it was determined that an F-15 fighter jet in the airspace above central Illinois course corrected creating a sonic boom.  When the aircraft broke the sound barrier, the pressure wave created an audible noise and minor shaking in the region.

At this time there are no reports of damage associated with the incident.

  1. John, I recall being told (not sure if it was true or not) the military would use the coordinates of the Noble water tower as a practice target for training flights.

Feliz Navidad to you and your family from NW CO

  2. I grew up in the 60’s in Champaign. The jets at Chanute AFB flew over our house every day and broke the sound barrier, We got used to it, On days when they didn’t fly we wondered where they were!We loved the noise.

  3. Yeah. I heard it and thought, “Hmm, maybe a jet breaking the sound barrier?” When I was a kid, the military jets from ? Hulman Field Airport, Terre Haute ? used to frequently occupy the air space around Paris/Edgar County. Occasionally, one would break the sound barrier. The fly “over” that was actually a fly “by” that stands out in my mind occurred one early evening when one of them dropped down and flew the length of the West Lake (maybe the East Lake too) as I was near the old beach. That bad-ass wasn’t but about 100 feet above the lake when he shot past, east to west. Never forgot it. Very cool.

  4. The jet corrected? I thought you had to fly at a certain spend and that caused a breaking of the sound barrier
