Because my thank you note to those who supported and voted for me in the Marshall Advocate is banned and cannot be published there, I will post it here.
I did not win this election by myself at all. I did not expect to win at all because my expected vote count before the election was 120 and no way that would win. What I did not expect was that the vilest campaign in memory against an alderman (me) would hurt my opponent even worse. Four years ago, I beat Randy McGinnis 197-98. Yesterday I beat Denny by 116-85. While I got fewer votes than last time, so did my opponent compared to last time. What the constant attacks and the offensive signs did was scare timid people away from voting. An election like this should not happen in a small town, where people should be able to work together, but it is now obvious that the attitude is that if you don’t go along with us, we’ll bully you out of office and ruin you. WRONG.
One major loser in this election is the credibility of Gary Strohm, publisher of the Marshall Advocate. After his articles and editorials against me, and others in the Park Board race, it’s now apparent a majority of voters don’t buy his B.S. and you can have the newspaper against you and win. I did it.
From all the calls and e-mails I have received since the election, it’s amazing how many friends a winner has. But when it comes to friends who helped me, I will list them and thank them: Thank you to all those who came and voted for me. You decided to show the world wrongdoing is not what you want. The City will be better for it. A Special thank-you to J.D. Spangler of WMMC for insisting I should stay positive and let the attacks go and stay on message. To Peg Mills for that nice radio ad you did and paid for. To City
Aldermen Cheryl Raisner, Cathy Macke, and Jim McKittrick for voting against wrongdoing and keeping your honor and sticking with me when the going got tough. To Randy Miller and another person who requested his name be kept out of the news (he has a close relative who works for the city) who helped round up the decisive votes needed. To my Daughter Melody Boyer who did a radio ad for me. To Kenny & Sue who helped me as much as they could. To Gloria, Judy, Veda, and Millie who prayed for me and helped me. To my Grandson Christopher and My wife Marilyn for their support and to all those who let me put signs on their property, And to John Kraft and Kirk Allen for their unwavering support without which I don’t think I could have made it.
    THANK YOU
