Kansas Village Ballot Question A Sign Of The Times?

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

Edgar Co. (ECWd) –

We have said for years that critical thinking is lacking across the board in this country, and our education system is failing on a grand scale on that point.

A proposition placed on the ballot in Kansas, Illinois, is a perfect example.

The election result reporting indicates the proposition was to reduce the number of trustees.

“VILLAGE OF KANSAS PROPOSITION TO REDUCE NUMBER OF TRUSTEES”

Really?  Is that what the proposition was?

The Question:

“Shall the Board of Trustees of the Village of Kansas, Illinois, be reduced from 4 members rather than 6 members? Yes – NO “

Can anyone explain how you REDUCE from 4 members when it’s a 6-member board?

Considering the current village board has 6 trustees, it’s not possible to reduce from 4 members. While we understand the intent, the question is bogus and should never have been placed on the ballot as it was presented.

We contacted the County Clerk about the question, and he said, “Good morning, that is the way they submitted it to me”.

My question: Did anyone proofread this question?

The vote results were 40 Yes and 70 No, with only 26.8% of the registered voters actually voting.

So what do those results mean?  It means 40 people who voted believe you can reduce from 4 to get to 6. That is scary!

Maybe there is some hope in those results, as 70 people voted the proposition down with their NO vote.
