On January 30, 2022

SPRINGFIELD, IL. (ECWd) –

HB5369 was filed which will mandate state and local governments who own and operate motor vehicles to place government license plates on them, and to identify which local government the vehicle is owned and operated by.

It exempts undercover police investigative vehicles.

This Bill will save taxpayers of local governments each and every year they own and operate vehicles.

Government plates costs around $40 (one-time fee) while civilian plates costs around $151 each year.

It also permits, by using the government plates, citizens to monitor the activities of their local government officials, while they are using government vehicles.

Synopsis As Introduced:
Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that no vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display nongovernmental license plates. Provides that every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local government to which the vehicle belongs, to the license plate or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle approaching from behind. Exempts vehicles being used in undercover police operations. Effective immediately.
